With everything from cameras and music players to GPS and full Internet access seemingly standard on the majority of mobile phones these days, what is the intrepid manufacturer keen to make an impression on a jaded buying public, going to add next? Well, Samsung have decided to take their music player to another level at the same time as filling a market niche few would have thought existed, by introducing the M7600 Beat DJ, a mobile phone and mobile DJ unit!
Why You Should Buy the BeatDJ- The Beat DJ application allows you to create your own music or remix existing tracks.
- It has a 2.8" AMOLED touchscreen.
- The M7600 uses Samsung's TouchWIZ user interface.
- A 3.2 megapixel camera sits on the rear panel.
- Assisted GPS is built-in.
- Comes with an 8GB memory card in the box.
The unusual 'pill' shaped M7600 is a compact phone and a clever piece of design. It weighs just 99 grams, making it very light, and measures 112x51x13.9mm, so you'll never have a problem slipping it into your pocket and forgetting about it until it's needed. The curved ends of the phone itself conceal the stereo speakers, which are enhanced by Bang & Olufsen ICEPower, giving a far better sound when the phone is facing you in landscape orientation, while sitting on the end is a 3.5mm jack plug for your own headphones.
The touchscreen display is a beautifully bright OLED item displaying at a resolution of 240x400, with 16 million colours. The operating system will be familiar to anyone who has used a touchscreen mobile from Samsung recently, and it also incorporates the excellent TouchWIZ user interface, where you can drag inactive widgets from a side bar on to you home screen in order to activate them.
However, it won't be the pretty design or friendly OS which attracts anyone to the Beat DJ, it will be the flashy music player and its ability to let you create your own tracks! The music player itself has been specially created for the M7600 and takes advantage of the circular control at the base of the touchscreen, which overlaps on to the actual handset case. This iPod-like control deals with the track forward/track back commands, while the display replicates this circle in its centre, allowing you to skip through the song playing. By turning on the Beat DJ feature, this control then lets you scratch, add filters and sound effects plus make fine adjustments to any customisation you've added. It's intuitive enough and with some practice, keen DJ's should be able to create something quite impressive, which can then be recorded on to the phone!
The M7600 Beat DJ also has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, face and smile recognition, plus an LED flash, Assisted GPS with geo-tagging, virtual 5.1 audio, the power-saving Bang & Olufsen ICEPower amplifier, 3G with HSDPA and a MicroSD card slot to add up to 16GB of internal memory.
As an added bonus you'll also find an 8GB microSD card included in the box, with six Ministry of Sound tracks pre-loaded! The tracks are as follows:
- Steve Angello vs Laidback Luke feat Robin S - Show Me Love
- Kid Cudi vs Crookers - Day n Night
- Bart B More vs Oliver Twizt - Finally
- Basshunter - Walk On Water
- September - Can't Get Over
- Lasgo - Out of My Mind
It would be easy to pass the M7600 as nothing more than a gimmick and while it's correct to assume it won't appeal to everyone, Samsung have put considerable thought and effort into making the Beat DJ feature something special. It's unique, usable and capable of making music – in the right hands. They have also avoided the trap of not bothering with any other features, as the 3G, camera and GPS make the M7600 very desirable. If you have any interest in making music as well as listening to it, then the M7600 Beat DJ is aimed right at you!
