sony ericsson w995

  • Phone typeSlider
  • Height97 mm
  • Width49 mm
  • Depth15 mm
  • Weight113 grams

With a model number like 995, you get the impression Sony Ericsson want you to know this is a high-end, top quality product. So surely with a tag like this, the W995 makes the tea, takes out the dustbin and prepares a lovely four course meal for you. OK, so it doesn't do any of those things, but this is one phone which brings the best of both the Walkman and CyberShot range of phones together in one fantastic package, whilst even finding space to squeeze in one of the most requested Sony Ericsson features ever – so we're prepared to forgive it!

Why You Should Buy the W995
  • Walkman 4.0 music player.
  • An 8.1 megapixel camera.
  • Assisted GPS.
  • The W995 is a 3G handset with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • M2 Memory Stick slot for increasing storage, an 8GB is included.
  • A 3.5mm jack plug built-in!

Those in the market for an all-round mobile phone which satisfies both their camera and music player desires, usually have no choice but to purchase a top-end smartphone. But for those who don't want the fiddle of learning a more complex new OS, the W995 offers an almost ideal alternative. The Sony Ericsson feature-phone operating system is easy to use and attractive to look at, especially with the addition of the Flash Lite themes found inside this model.

This ease of use continues when you open the Walkman software. A direct access button can be found on the edge of the handset along with play, track forward and track back keys, each nicely illuminated for use in the dark. This is version 4.0 of the Walkman software so it includes all the equaliser and playback options one would need, plus the Sony Ericsson SensMe, Shake Control and TrackID features. Audio quality is also superb, with the W995 beating the majority of its competition. It's also great to see Sony Ericsson finally fitting a standard headphone jack on the body, rather than relying on an adaptor.

The camera is equally well specified. The 8 megapixel lens takes pictures at a maximum resolution of 3264x2448 and features autofocus, a PowerLED flash, face detection, geo-tagging, macro mode, exposure metering and an image stabiliser, so you should be able to get the very best from your pictures. An accelerometer handles screen rotation and the user interface is very similar to that found on most other Sony Ericsson camera phones, meaning it's simple to use and almost entirely managed by the D-pad and the side-mounted shutter key.

Assisted GPS is built-in, as is an FM RDS radio, the excellent Netfront browser, a YouTube client and a wide selection of motion controlled games. The W995 is similarly sized to the C905, but at only 118 grams, it's considerably lighter, however the slider form factor is not as smooth and rounded as the top range CyberShot phone. Three different colours are available, Progressive Black, Energetic Red and Cosmic Silver.

Summary of the Sony Ericsson W995.

If you want a feature phone with both a brilliant camera and a great sounding music player, the W995 is a perfect purchase. Alternatives include the Nokia N86, however this is a Symbian smartphone, and the excellent Samsung INNOV8, but for all out usability and a set of great features, it's hard to beat the new Sony Ericsson best-of-both-worlds offering.

The original Armani may have pre-dated it, but the Tocco F480 was the model where Samsung came of touchscreen age. Although they both share similar looks, the Armani's innovative but flawed Croix interface has been dumped in favour of the far more user-friendly TouchWiz system, which is also found on the Pixon. In fact, thinking of the Tocco as a Pixon-lite wouldn't be far off the mark, as it gives the 8 megapixel monster a serious run for its money!

Why You Should Buy The Tocco!
  • Created using glossy plastic and shiny metal, this 100 gram, 11mm thick handset is a thing of beauty!
  • A 5 megapixel camera lens can be found on the rear of the handset.
  • It's a 3G handset with 7.2Mbps HSDPA support.
  • An FM RDS radio plus a music and video player for entertainment.

The main attraction of the Samsung Tocco has to be its touchscreen. It's a 2.8” screen with a resolution of 240x320 and although that may sound a little small for a touchscreen device, it does the job perfectly well thanks to its brightness and sharp colours. This is the first Samsung to feature the TouchWiz interface, a clever little system which consists of a sidebar on your main screen filled with widgets. Dragging these widgets from the sidebar on to the main screen with your finger activates them, displaying everything from a clock to your music player and making it a quick job to activate your favourite features. The Tocco also has haptic feedback – a vibration when you press the screen – which best of all can be adjusted for sensitivity.

Samsung have overhauled their music player to make it finger-friendly and have included many custom options to ensure it never becomes a frustrating experience trying to listen to the song you want! Much of this is thanks to the widget, which does everything one needs without visiting the full on music player deeper in the menu. The large screen looks good when playing videos, however only a few formats are supported. Unusually, Samsung have given the Tocco just over 200MB of internal memory – which makes a nice change – plus there is a MicroSD card slot for extra storage.

The 5 megapixel camera onboard the Tocco is up to Samsung's usual high standards, taking detailed and colourful snaps. In order to make your pictures look the best they can, there is a variety of software enhancements which may help including shake reduction and face detection. The camera is an autofocus item with an LED flash for those lowlight shots, plus it will shoot video too. Completing the Tocco's feature line-up is an array of connectivity options, with GPRS and EDGE to back up super-fast 3G with HSDPA. Finally, A2DP Bluetooth is on hand for wireless talking and listening.

Summary of the Samsung F480 Tocco.

There is little to fault on the Samsung F480 Tocco, it combines the right features inside a very pocket-friendly casing which looks every bit as stylish as the designer-branded Armani and thanks to the excellent TouchWiz interface and responsive touchscreen, both first time and experienced touchscreen users will be satisfied with its user-friendliness. We love the little Tocco and are positive you will too!

And Now the Tocco has a big brother, the Samsung Tocco Ultra, which features the same Touchwiz User interface, a 2.8" touchscreen, an 8MegaPixel Camera, GPS and 3G connectivity.

Overview

The Sony Ericsson C905 is a slider mobile phone which when closed could be easily mistaken for a regular point-and-shoot camera, it's only when you pop the slider to reveal the keypad that the illusion is broken and the C905 becomes a phone. However, looking like a camera isn't any good if you don't have the tech to back it up, but the C905 has no problem here as it's a massive 8 megapixel Cybershot model!

Features at a Glance
  • The huge 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and plenty of software enhancements!
  • Built-in Assisted GPS with geo-tagging feature.
  • It's a 3G phone with HSDPA and Wi-Fi for the fastest connections.
  • Multimedia features include music, video and an FM RDS radio.
  • 160MB of internal memory plus a 2GB Memory Stick Micro.
Why You Should Buy the C905.

The C905 is a thing of beauty with the slider closed, with the softly rounded edges for a comfortable grip, chrome highlights surround the sides where a selection of buttons for controlling the camera are found and the body has a soft-touch coating emphasizing the C905's high level of build quality. As you hold the phone like you would a camera, the capture button and zoom rocker fall naturally under your fingers and the screen, a 2.4" 240x320 TFT item, does a great job as the viewfinder. If you are wanting a phone which feels exactly like a camera, the C905 won't disappoint.

The 8.1 megapixel lens takes fantastic pictures, full of vibrant colour and detail and just like other CyberShot phones, there is a wealth of software to assist in this process. Naturally it has autofocus and the C905 also has a xenon flash for real low light shooting ability, face detection, red eye reduction and smart contrast too. When you activate the camera, there are several dedicated keys on the face of the phone which illuminate to allow control over your picture; these are located around the D-pad and to the side of the screen, providing a great solution to the issue of digging about inside a menu when all you want to do is take the picture!

The Sony Ericsson C905 is their flagship CyberShot model and it's loaded with features in addition to the brilliant camera. The 3G phone has HSDPA support for fast data speeds while out and about, plus Wi-Fi if you're near a wireless hotspot, giving plenty of opportunity to use the first class web browser installed on the C905. We love its intuitive scrolling and very handy zoom features, so much so we wish the phone had a bigger screen to display it on! A GPS receiver is built-in and comes with both Google Maps and a trial version of Wayfinder Navigator installed. You can also geo-tag your pictures too.

Finally, the music and video player are similar to those found on a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone without a few of the enhancements, but retaining the excellent sound and picture quality, plus there is an FM RDS radio and a wealth of organisaiton tools.

Summary of the Sony Ericsson C905

It may not be the smallest or lightest phone available, but the C905 is easily the most camera-like of the current crop of 8 megapixel camera phones. Picture quality is also fantastic, it has almost every essential top range feature and good looks too! Finish the package off with decent connectivity options and the excellent NetFront browser and the C905 emerges as one of the most complete mobile solutions available.

Samsung Armani M7500

Overview

The Samsung Emporio Armani M7500 Night Effect is the follow-up to the Samsung P520 Armani touchscreen mobile phone released over a year ago, however a lot has changed during this time and the Night Effect is a very different beast from its big brother. Firstly and most noticeably is the M7500 is not a touchscreen and secondly, this time the phone is branded with the Emporio Armani name, signifying it's aimed at the same youthful, stylish people who so love that particular range of clothes. Is it just a pretty face though? Let's find out!

Why You Should Buy the Sansung Armani M7500
  • It says Emporio Armani everywhere! Under the screen, along the sides, on the box and a huge logo stamped on the rear doesn't make it difficult to guess who endorses the M7500.
  • It has a trick light system where an LED strip light runs around the edge of the phone, broken only by a logo on one side and music keys on the other, which glows blue, red or green.
  • The AMOLED screen looks fantastic!
  • It's a 3G mobile phone with HSDPA support.
  • On the rear is a 3.2 megapixel camera.

It's the M7500 Night Effect's standout feature, it's where it got its name and it's also the part you'll love or hate – the LED lights encircling the case. The subtle strip is broken on the left side by the words Emporio Armani and the familiar logo, which also glows with atomic brightness, while on the right side a set of dedicated music keys reside. When you switch the phone on, when you receive or make a call or when you listen to music, the lights react and light up in your chosen colour or sequence of colours. Whatever your thoughts, there's no denying it really makes the new Samsung Armani phone stand out from the crowd!

Thankfully Samsung have included a nice piece of tech inside the M7500 to offset all this flash, the beautiful AMOLED screen. Protected by reinforced glass, the display is bright and clear, highlighting the advantages of using this type of screen instantly. Whether there is any power saving is difficult to assess, especially as any additional battery life will be used to power the LEDs! We love the interface too, which thanks to a selection of shortcuts on the home screen is easy to delve into quickly. If you have to explore, you can do so via a regular grid layout or by a V-shape scrolling affair reminiscent of Sony Ericsson's Walkman profile.

The 3.2 megapixel camera mounted on the rear of the casing doesn't have a flash, so don't expect to snap away in some dark, fashionable after-hours club; however in daylight the autofocus camera does a good job, plus the video provides decent results too, so all is not lost. The 3G HSDPA connection gives you plenty of speed when it comes to browsing the Internet and the 2.2” screen displays everything perfectly for general use. Finally, the music player is a highlight of the M7500 Night Effect and the sound quality promises to be up to Samsung's usual high standards.

Summary of the Samsung Emporio Armani M7500 Night Effect.

Its full name may be ridiculously long for a mobile phone and many are going to dislike its garish light display, however the Armani M7500 is not aimed at those who prefer their phones to be restrained and known only by a series of numbers. It's about flaunting your love of quality designer products, individuality and a desire to own a mobile phone which fits in with your style. Put simply, if you don't get it, don't get it!

Nokia 6700 Silver

If there is a style of mobile phone Nokia excels at, it’s the simple candybar. Welcome to the Nokia 6700. An evolution of the 6300, the Nokia 6700 combines a classic design with modern features and has retained the silver/black livery, whilst incorporating a metal keypad with a smooth metallic case for a sleek luxurious finish.

Crammed with a series of excellent main features, the 6700 has one or two surprises inside. On the sleek, uncluttered rear panel is the lens for a 5 megapixel camera complete with a powerful LED flash, autofocus and VGA video shooting capability, while along the side you’ll find the camera shortcut key and volume rocker. A microSD card slot is hidden underneath the battery so no hot-swapping, but does make for a cleaner look. The 6700 is a 3G device with HSDPA support and A2DP Bluetooth, plus Assisted GPS with Nokia Maps pre-installed on the included microSD card.

The phone uses S40 6th Edition so therefore you'll have an excellent music player, decent HTML browser, plus the familiar Nokia icons and layout. Using the phone is a pleasure - the keys are easy to press, despite being mounted on a single surface, and the soft keys falling to thumb comfortably. In the centre of the handset is the D-pad for navigation purposes, plus it houses an alert LED to signal a new SMS or missed call. Finally, just like on the top range Arte series handsets, a tap of the 6700 mutes an incoming call - very neat indeed!

The 6700 also boasts two features which will be working away without you noticing, but all the while improving your mobile experience. The first is CABC, Content Adaptive Brightness Control, which uses sensors for determining the amount of ambient light around you, then by checking to see what application you’re using, adjusting the screen brightness and contrast accordingly - for example a game would be brighter and more powerful than reading an SMS - putting less strain on the battery and improving its standby time. Nokia have also introduced UNC - Uplink Noise Cancellation - to improve even further the call quality on the 6700. It does this by monitoring two microphones, one for the voice and another for surrounding environmental sound, to create the clearest possible call.

NOKIA E63 blue

  • Phone typeCandy bar
  • Height113 mm
  • Width59 mm
  • Depth13 mm
  • Weight126 grams

The Nokia E63 is the little brother to the hugely popular Nokia E71. With all the frills of the E71 trimmed back, the Nokia E63 is a straight and steady email machine that does its job with beautiful precision and really places it in an affordable price bracket. The 2.36" TFT screen is great for reading and writing messages, and the full QWERTY keyboard makes typing out emails a breeze, while Push Email lets you send mail messages immediately, just like texts.

Nokia's E-series is their all-about-business range, and the E63 is designed for the modern business person in mind with 3G support for fast Internet connections, and VoIP-enabled Wi-Fi to stay up to date whilst on the go. The E63 also comes with the fantastic "mode switch" system seen on the E71, where you can switch your phone from business mode to personal mode when you go home for the day, instantly setting up different mailboxes and preferences to keep you moving and connected all the time.

Although the E63 does not have the GPS and HSDPA of its big brother, it does come with a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash, an FM radio, WiFi, full QWERTY keyboard, and microSD card slot (expandable up to 8GB). A 3.5mm audio jack means you can use your favourite pair of headphones for listening to music, and perhaps most impressive of all is the 18-day battery life.

For those who love Nokia's E-series, or are looking for an email phone that isn't hugely expensive or corporate-orientated (like a BlackBerry) the Nokia E63 is the perfect choice. With all the essentials for a modern working life, plus the ability to switch automatically to your personal profile when you leave the office, you would be hard pressed to find a better choice than this great phone.

samsung beatDJ M7600

  • Phone typeCandy bar
  • Height112 mm
  • Width51 mm
  • Depth13.9 mm
  • Weight99.7 grams

With everything from cameras and music players to GPS and full Internet access seemingly standard on the majority of mobile phones these days, what is the intrepid manufacturer keen to make an impression on a jaded buying public, going to add next? Well, Samsung have decided to take their music player to another level at the same time as filling a market niche few would have thought existed, by introducing the M7600 Beat DJ, a mobile phone and mobile DJ unit!

Why You Should Buy the BeatDJ
  • The Beat DJ application allows you to create your own music or remix existing tracks.
  • It has a 2.8" AMOLED touchscreen.
  • The M7600 uses Samsung's TouchWIZ user interface.
  • A 3.2 megapixel camera sits on the rear panel.
  • Assisted GPS is built-in.
  • Comes with an 8GB memory card in the box.

The unusual 'pill' shaped M7600 is a compact phone and a clever piece of design. It weighs just 99 grams, making it very light, and measures 112x51x13.9mm, so you'll never have a problem slipping it into your pocket and forgetting about it until it's needed. The curved ends of the phone itself conceal the stereo speakers, which are enhanced by Bang & Olufsen ICEPower, giving a far better sound when the phone is facing you in landscape orientation, while sitting on the end is a 3.5mm jack plug for your own headphones.

The touchscreen display is a beautifully bright OLED item displaying at a resolution of 240x400, with 16 million colours. The operating system will be familiar to anyone who has used a touchscreen mobile from Samsung recently, and it also incorporates the excellent TouchWIZ user interface, where you can drag inactive widgets from a side bar on to you home screen in order to activate them.

However, it won't be the pretty design or friendly OS which attracts anyone to the Beat DJ, it will be the flashy music player and its ability to let you create your own tracks! The music player itself has been specially created for the M7600 and takes advantage of the circular control at the base of the touchscreen, which overlaps on to the actual handset case. This iPod-like control deals with the track forward/track back commands, while the display replicates this circle in its centre, allowing you to skip through the song playing. By turning on the Beat DJ feature, this control then lets you scratch, add filters and sound effects plus make fine adjustments to any customisation you've added. It's intuitive enough and with some practice, keen DJ's should be able to create something quite impressive, which can then be recorded on to the phone!

The M7600 Beat DJ also has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, face and smile recognition, plus an LED flash, Assisted GPS with geo-tagging, virtual 5.1 audio, the power-saving Bang & Olufsen ICEPower amplifier, 3G with HSDPA and a MicroSD card slot to add up to 16GB of internal memory.

As an added bonus you'll also find an 8GB microSD card included in the box, with six Ministry of Sound tracks pre-loaded! The tracks are as follows:

  • Steve Angello vs Laidback Luke feat Robin S - Show Me Love
  • Kid Cudi vs Crookers - Day n Night
  • Bart B More vs Oliver Twizt - Finally
  • Basshunter - Walk On Water
  • September - Can't Get Over
  • Lasgo - Out of My Mind
Summary of the Samsung M7600 Beat DJ.

It would be easy to pass the M7600 as nothing more than a gimmick and while it's correct to assume it won't appeal to everyone, Samsung have put considerable thought and effort into making the Beat DJ feature something special. It's unique, usable and capable of making music – in the right hands. They have also avoided the trap of not bothering with any other features, as the 3G, camera and GPS make the M7600 very desirable. If you have any interest in making music as well as listening to it, then the M7600 Beat DJ is aimed right at you!

BLACK BERRY STORM

  • Phone typeCandy bar
  • Height112.5 mm
  • Width62.2 mm
  • Depth14 mm
  • Weight155 grams

Overview

The BlackBerry® Storm™ smartphone is Research In Motion's first full touchscreen mobile phone and on the surface, it's just another one to add to the ever growing list available. However, the Storm™ has gone in its own direction and features innovations not found anywhere else, plus the draw of the awesome email capabilities of a BlackBerry® mobile cannot be underestimated. Read on to see why the Storm™ was one of the most anticipated mobile phone releases of the year!

Features at a Glance
  • A 3.2" touchscreen with a 360x480 resolution and SurePress™ technology.
  • Built-in Assisted GPS with BlackBerry® Maps installed.
  • A 3.2 megapixel camera.
  • Music and video player.
  • The Storm™ is 3G with HSDPA support.
  • 1GB of internal memory and a microSD slot compatible with 8GB card.
Why You Should Buy the Storm™

The BlackBerry® Storm™ is running version 4.7 of the BlackBerry® OS, which has been enhanced to become more finger friendly. What is good however, is how little the experience has changed from other recent BlackBerrys®, you have the regular shortcut keys on the home screen and either by pressing the screen or the handy BlackBerry® button below it takes you to the full menu as usual. Alongside the BlackBerry® menu key are the call and back keys, however, one could also call the entire screen a key all by itself! This is because of SurePress™, a system which means you actually have to press the screen down to select a function, resulting in a soft click.

At first, this can be a little disconcerting and it will take a while to become fully acquainted with it, however once you are you'll appreciate the level of feedback this system provides. BlackBerry® have also thought about the text input too, something which is so important to the overall BlackBerry® experience. Holding the phone normally gives you the SureType™ style keypad familiar to anyone who has used a BlackBerry® Pearl™ smartphone, but by turning the phone on its side - and letting the accelerometer adjust the screen automatically - a full QWERTY keyboard is displayed to make tapping out messages much more natural. DataViz is installed which allows you to edit most popular documents and then send them on too.

Like many other touchscreen phones, a swipe of your finger scrolls around pages or through your picture gallery and just as before, the BlackBerry® key brings up the menu so anyone used to a BlackBerry® OS will be at home here, while new users will be quick to adjust. The Storm™ is a 3G device and has support for HSDPA plus EDGE and GPRS, so web browsing on the move is as fast as currently possible, plus the BlackBerry® browser has been given a tweak or two and is better than previous incarnations. Of course, this being a BlackBerry® means it excels at anything email related and connects quickly and simply to just about any network you can think of.

Away from the business side of the Storm™, you have the 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash, a very capable music and video player, a 3.5mm jack plug for your own headphones and the Assisted GPS receiver complete with BlackBerry® Maps.

Summary of the BlackBerry® Storm™

It may have had a difficult birth, but the Storm™ is set to come into its own when the application store starts to fill up and everyone gets used to clicking the screen instead of just touching it. In addition to the new screen technology the Storm™ is still a brilliant email device, plus the improved browsing and media capabilities round out this great buy!

  • The 3.5", 360x640 pixel resolution, 16:9 touchscreen capable of displaying 16 million colours.
  • A 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lensed camera with dual-LED flash.
  • Built-in Assisted GPS and digital compass for precise locations within Nokia Maps.
  • A huge 32GB of internal memory, plus a MicroSD expansion slot, potentially taking it to 48GB!
  • Symbian S60 5th Edition is the operating system of choice.

The thing is, we could just copy and paste the N97 specification sheet under the 'Why You Should Buy It' heading, as this phone contains so many neat touches and truly innovative features, that regardless of you mobile wishes, chances are the Nokia N97 will meet and exceed them! This wouldn't do the phone justice though, so we will highlight some of out favourite points to give you an idea of just what a marvel this is. For instance, the home screen is 'Internet-aware', which means any of the widgets you install - news, weather and social networking are amongst them – will update in the same way Push email does, with no prompting from you!

The N97 wants you to use the Internet, and to do so you'll use a WebKit browser which not only has an RSS reader but Flash support too. The N97 is also fully integrated with Ovi, your online home for files, maps, pictures, video and games, all ready to share with your friends. Sharing is another important area of the N97 and aside from the auto-updating social network widgets on the home screen, Nokia are introducing So-Lo – which stands for Social Location – for you to share your location with your friends.

To feed the N97's hunger for data is a 3G/HSDPA connection with Wi-Fi too, plus the usual GPRS, EDGE and A2DP Bluetooth. The GPS receiver is an Assisted model, plus the phone comes pre-loaded with Nokia Maps 2.0, nicely tweaked for touch usage. With a screen as gorgeous as this, video will look fantastic and there is a music player, FM RDS radio and FM transmitter rounding out the multimedia side, plus a TV-out and 3.5mm jack plug connection.

However, the Nokia is not just another touchscreen-only powerhouse, as the N97 takes its tag of 'mobile computer' very seriously, as by gently nudging the screen, it will slide out and reveal a full QWERTY keyboard! The build quality is superb too, evidenced by the slick motion with which the keyboard comes into view and the sturdy 150 gram weight.

Summary of the Nokia N97.

We could go on and on about how impressive the N97 is, but we think you've got the message! Plus, there are so many things to discover it would be a shame to spoil them! In the wake of the popularity of netbooks and more complex smartphones, the N97 is coming at a time when it will be most appreciated and not just by phone geeks either, its usability, versatility and style will appeal to many. Trust us, it's going to be absolutely huge!
